Large Courtyard, Farmoor

Originally a cow-yard behind a farmhouse, raised beds along the wall had been added, but otherwise it was just an expanse of ugly, uneven concrete, with hollyhocks growing in the cracks. The only glimmer of interest was a limited view of local fields beyond the stone wall.

My design brought interest within the walls, by creating an octagonal central feature of raised beds. The stonework toned in with the new paving which covered the concrete, and with the house itself. The paving was in three levels, with steps which echoed the octagonal theme.

Trellis panels were fixed to walls, providing support for climbing plants, and the existing climbing rose on the house wall was trained on to a new wrought-iron framework which curved under and around the window.
